S04 receive conditional 3. Liga licence

The Deutsche-Fußball-Bund (DFB) issued FC Schalke 04 with a licence for match operations in the 3. Liga on Monday evening (22nd April). As expected, this is subject to liquidity conditions that will have to be fulfilled by the beginning of June. After reviewing the documents, the S04 board are satisfied of being able to fulfil these conditions.

The DFB are responsible for confirming eligibility to take part in the 3. Liga. Their decision to issue this licence subject to certain conditions had been expected by the Schalke board. “We had anticipated that the DFB would identify a liquidity gap at this point in time. As a board, we’re satisfied that we can fulfil the conditions that have been set. That’s a strong signal for the future of our club,” said Christina Rühl-Hamers, S04’s board member responsible for finances.

“At the same time, securing safety remains our top priority and everyone’s aim. The earlier we achieve this, the better for our future plans,” continued Rühl-Hamers. Over the coming weeks, the club will prepare for both scenarios – in the 2. Bundesliga or 3. Liga – in a focused manner in order to be fully prepared for either situation.

S04 previously received an unconditional licence for the 2. Bundesliga from the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) on 18th April.
