5-5 draw sees Taylan Bulut and Germany U19s miss out on first EUROs win

In what was a spectacular match in Bucharest, Taylan Bulut and the Germany U19 national team missed out on three crucial points at the European Championship in Romania on Tuesday (17/06), despite holding a four-goal lead against England. At the final whistle in the Stadionul Arcul de Triumf, the scoreboard read an astonishing 5-5. Just like in the opening match against the Netherlands, Schalke’s right-back was named in the starting XI and once again played the full 90 minutes.

Three days after their 3-0 defeat to the Netherlands, head coach Hanno Balitsch’s team delivered a strong first-half performance and went into the break 4-1 up, with Bulut playing a role in Germany’s third goal. in the 42nd minute, Schalke’s number 31 passed from the right-hand side just outside the box into the centre, finding Kjell Wätjen, who struck the ball first time from 20 yards. Hoffenheim’s Max Moerstedt then deflected the shot decisively, leaving England goalkeeper Tommy Setford with no chance.

The other German goals before the break came from Noah Darvich (7’, FC Barcelona), Said El Mala (31’, Viktoria Köln) and Leopold Wurm (44’, Jahn Regensburg). Fulham midfielder Josh King had briefly reduced England’s deficit to 2-1 in the 35th minute.

Germany then made a dream start to the second half. Less than 180 seconds after the restart, Said El Mala bagged his second goal of the night to make it 5-1, but the game was clearly anything but wrapped up, as England netted four times between the 52nd and 63rd minutes to level the scores. The goals came from Ethan Wheatley (52’, Walsall), Reiss-Alexander Russell-Denny (55’, Chelsea), Zach Abbott (61’, Nottingham Forest) and Jesse Derry (63’, Crystal Palace). Despite those dramatic 11 minutes, no more goals fell in the final half hour and both sides claimed a point.

Germany will face Norway in their final group-stage match, with the two teams level on points. The match will take place on Friday (20/06, 19:00 CEST) in Voluntari. The Netherlands lead the group with a maximum six points, while England sit second with two. The top two teams in the group qualify for the semi-finals. With everything still to play for on the final matchday, Germany still have a chance of reaching the knockout stage, but they will need a win and have to hope that England drop points.
