First appearance at the Olympics for Ibrahima Cissé

Mali and Ibrahima Cissé were narrowly beaten at the Olympics on Saturday night (27/7). They lost their second group game at the tournament 1-0 to Japan at the Stade Matmut-Atlantique in Bordeaux. Schalke’s centre back played the full game and recorded an impressive challenge success rate.

It was the 23-year-old’s first appearance at the tournament after remaining an unused substitute in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against Israel.

Mali came extremely close to picking something up from their second game too. After VV St. Truiden’s Rihito Yamamoto gave Japan the lead in the 78th minute, Cissé’s side won a penalty in injury time, however Cheickna Doumbia of Shabab Al-Ahli missed the target from the spot.

Mali are now in third place with one point from two games in Group D. Japan have already qualified for the knockouts with a 100% record so far. Cissé & Co. can qualify by beating Paraguay on Tuesday (30/7). The South Americans are second right now on three points.
