Leon Goretzka: A big step

Two wins in a row have moved Schalke into fourth place. We noted the reaction after Schalke’s 2-0 win against 1. FSV Mainz 05.

Guido Burgstaller:

Mainz are very aggressive at the counter press. Therefore, it was our goal to get the ball forward quickly and control the game on the front foot. It worked well in phases. Sometimes, we just lacked the final ball and a bit of decisiveness. It would have meant we’d have been home and dry earlier on in the game. Defensively, we worked very hard as a team and that starts from the front. I have to give a big compliment to our defence. They won every 50/50 and gave nothing away. Going forward, we always look likely to score a goal or two.

Leon Goretzka:

In total, it was a solid win. We did what we needed to do. It’s not my main aim to score goals but at the moment everything just seems to be going in. I had quite a lot of time to think about my finish for my goal. It reminded me of my first goal against Leverkusen. It’s great to be up to fourth place but what’s more important is how we’re improving as a team. Tonight was a big step in the right direction.

Max Meyer:

We played well. Sure, there were moments that we could have countered more effectively but we’re happy with the result. Mainz are a good pressing side. Therefore, it was important to take the lead early on. I’m happy for Leon scoring again. We all know how important he is for us. I like playing in this position as I get the ball a lot. The head coach has faith in me and I always give my all.
