Simon Terodde: We had enough chances to score

With the score at 0-0 in the closing stages on Easter Sunday (31/3), Schalke’s players and fans had hope of one final chance for a winner. “In my eyes we should have had a penalty for handball. When you see what happened again afterwards, it’s really tough to take,” says Simon Terodde. The captain does, however, recognise that there is room for criticism of the team’s performance: “We had enough chances to score.”

Tobias Mohr whipped in a dangerous cross, which Terodde let run through to Kenan Karaman. FC Twente’s Gijs Smal couldn’t get the desired connection on his clearance and the ball fell into the path of the skipper, who smashed it past Lars Unnerstall from close range.

Simon Terodde will not extend his contract

A promotion hero and record holder will say goodbye at the end of the season. Simon Terodde will leave FC Schalke 04 after the conclusion of 2022/23. The 35-year-old announced his decision on Tuesday (4/4) in a meeting with Peter Knäbel, board member for sport, which was carried out in good faith. It is the shared aim of the club and the player to fully focus on the all-important relegation battle through early communication.

Offside? Not offside? After a few seconds of nervous waiting, Simon Terodde was finally able to celebrate. The Schalke striker’s goal in the tenth minute of the home game against 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Wednesday (9/11), not only put the side in the lead but was also the winning goal for the Royal Blues as they earned a deserved three points at the VELTINS Arena.

His diving header flew in off the crossbar in the 82nd minute at the Weserstadion, the 154th time he found the net in the 2. Bundesliga, breaking the record that he had been tied with Dieter Schatzschneider for since the home game against FC Ingolstadt 04.
