Loris Karius extends his contract until 2027

FC Schalke 04 have agreed on a contract extension with goalkeeper Loris Karius after his current deal was set to expire this summer. The 31-year-old has signed a new deal which will run until 30th June 2027 and will now wear the number 1 shirt.

Karius, who joined Schalke over the winter, appeared four times for the Royal Blues in the second half of the season, making a number of important saves to earn the team points before suffering a season-ending injury in the 3-3 draw at SpVgg Greuther Fürth at the end of March.

“Our conversations with Loris were really positive, so we’re happy to have agreed on a contract extension. Loris has a number of excellent attributes as a goalkeeper and is also a true team player. We’re delighted that we will continue working with him,” explained Youri Mulder, director of professional football. “Loris has worked really hard on his recovery from injury to be ready to return to training for the start of pre-season.”

Head coach Miron Muslic commented: “Aside from his qualities as a goalkeeper, Loris also possesses a lot of experience and is desperate to perform well. He wants to take on responsibility and will be one of the leaders within the dressing room. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

“I’m really pleased that we were able to agree on a joint future together during our positive conversations. With my performances, I want to help the team play successful football again and win back the trust of the fans. That’s our responsibility as players, and it’s something we need to start working on from day one of pre-season,” said Loris Karius.

The 1.90m tall goalkeeper represented Germany at youth level and has played over 200 competitive games in his professional career. Karius was under contract at Premier League side Newcastle United until summer 2024, having previously played for 1. FSV Mainz 05, Liverpool, Besiktas and 1. FC Union Berlin. In the 2017/18 season, Karius played all 13 UEFA Champions League fixtures for Liverpool as they eventually lost the final to Real Madrid in May 2018.
