Youri Mulder to remain as S04's director of professional football

FC Schalke 04 and Youri Mulder will continue their cooperation, with the 56-year-old taking up a permanent position as the club's director of professional football until June 2027. Mulder had previously been in the role on an interim basis since November 2024, having also been a co-opted member of the supervisory board.

“From the start, I had been aiming to keep Youri on board as a key member of my leadership team. After taking up the position on an interim basis last autumn, he has already helped initiate plenty of changes and helped to profesionalize various processes. We will now continue down this path together in order to establish the best possible conditions for sporting success,” said Frank Baumann, who will take up a position as the club’s board member for sport from 1st June. “Youri’s primary task will be to head up the various departments that fall undder our professional performance centre and to continue developing these areas.”

I am really looking forward to having long-term responsibility at Schalke. We have some major challenges ahead of us and want to get back to playing a more successful brand of football again next term.

Youri Mulder

As he prepares to take on this challenge, Mulder is brimming with motivation: “I am really looking forward to having long-term responsibility at Schalke. We have some major challenges ahead of us and want to get back to playing a more successful brand of football again next term. Our fans have been left disappointed on too many occasions off the back of performances and results. We are all aware of the fact that many things need improving when reflecting on the past campaign. The overall analysis is clear and, therefore, we will work consistently on making changes going forward, in order to ensure Schalke’s outlook is positive once more.”

Mulder reflects on his 30-year connection with the Royal Blues. The former striker made the transfer from FC Twente to join Schalke 04 in the summer of 1993, playing for the Knappen until 2002. Mulder made a total of 202 competitive appearances during this period, scoring 43 goals and providing a further 29 assists. The Dutchman celebrated winning the 1997 UEFA Cup with S04 before clinching DFB-Pokal glory in both 2001 and 2002. Mulder served as assistant coach to Fred Rutten from July 2008 to March 2009, while also forming part of the interim coaching staff under Mike Büskens before and after this spell. In 2021, Mulder returned to Schalke to operate as a member on the supervisory board.
