Simon Terodde will not extend his contract

A promotion hero and record holder will say goodbye at the end of the season. Simon Terodde will leave FC Schalke 04 after the conclusion of 2022/23. The 35-year-old announced his decision on Tuesday (4/4) in a meeting with Peter Knäbel, board member for sport, which was carried out in good faith. It is the shared aim of the club and the player to fully focus on the all-important relegation battle through early communication.

“In the past weeks, there has been a lot of speculation in the media about my future. This is a topic that neither the club nor I need in these crucial weeks. Therefore, I would like to announce now that my time at Schalke 04 will definitely end in the summer,” confirmed Simon Terodde. “My time here was very emotional, marked by some great and intense moments that I will remember forever. Now I would like to write my last chapter at Schalke with my teammates and ultimately say goodbye with us staying in the league.”

Simon Terodde

“Everyone knows about my close relationship with Simon Terodde. In 2021, in a very difficult situation, he showed his commitment to Schalke 04 and the task of promotion when hardly anyone believed in it. And then, just over a year later, he celebrated his return to the Bundesliga as the record goal-scorer in the 2. Bundesliga and became part of FC Schalke 04’s long club history,” said Peter Knäbel. The fact that the vice-captain proactively approached the club impressed the board: “He has once again proven what an impressive sportsman and person he is. To take this step now in order to contest the final weeks of the season in a free and focused manner, not many would do that. Simon is very important for our team and I am sure that he will give everything to say goodbye to Schalke 04 still as a Bundesliga player.

Promotion hero and top goalscorer

The striker has already secured his place in the history books for the ‘Knappen’. Terodde scored 30 goals in 30 games in his first season for the Royal Blues, playing a key role in Schalke being able to celebrate an immediate return to the Bundesliga. He crowned an excellent 2021/22 season personally by becoming the 2. Bundesliga’s all-time top-scorer.

Some goals in particular stand out: With his goal to make it 1-0 in Bremen on 20th November 2021, Terodde overtook Dieter Schatzschneider to climb into first place in the all-time goalscoring list for the second division. He now leads this list with 172 goals (19 goals ahead of Schatzschneider). His winning goal in the third-last game of the season in Sandhausen was also particularly emotional. Thanks to Terodde’s strike to make it 2-1, the Royal Blues were one step away from sealing promotion to the Bundesliga – one week later this was guaranteed with a 3-2 win over FC St. Pauli. The scorer of a brace at a sold-out VELTINS-Arena that day: Schalke’s number 9.

Until this point, the attacker has played 59 competitive games for S04, with 39 goal involvements (33 goals, 6 assists).
