Youri Mulder to stay on as director of professional football until the end of the season

Youri Mulder will stay on as director of professional football at FC Schalke 04 until the end of the current season. The 55-year-old will remain the point of liaison for the coaching staff, team and first team performance centre staff. Mulder has also been working with Ben Manga over the past weeks as the director of squad planning, scouting and Knappenschmiede and as a board member in preparation for the upcoming winter transfer window. His position on the supervisory board of FC Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04 e.V will now be vacant until the season’s conclusion.

“Over the past weeks, Youri has been focusing on scrutinising, adapting and improving the processes going on in and around the first team performance centre,” said Matthias Tillmann, CEO of S04. “In addition to his footballing expertise and experience in professional football, he brings a positive energy, which is beneficial to those involved both inside and outside of the club. Youri provides FC Schalke 04 with a strong and well-respected face in the public eye.”

Youri Mulder is looking forward to a continuation of his work within the first team performance centre. “In the past few weeks, I and everyone involved have had improvement in mind, both for the results on and off the pitch. We have experienced successes as well as setbacks but if we continue to work together day by day on progressing and becoming more stable, then we will achieve our goals for this season.”

Board member for sport position to be reinstated

Meanwhile, the supervisory board met the decision to reinstate the position of board member for sport going forwards in order to create a clear hierarchical structure for liaison within the sporting side of the club and to delineate tasks more clearly. A select committee consisting of members of the supervisory board will conduct the appointment process. Chairman of the supervisory board of FC Schalke 04 Axel Hefer, explained the developments. “The fact that Youri will now remain director of professional football until the end of the season is important for two reasons. For one, his work to help the team through the current situation is invaluable. Secondly, we can ensure a smooth transition to the new board.”

Mulder began his professional career at FC Twente before moving to FC Schalke 04 in 1993, with whom he stayed until 2002. In 1997, the attacker won the UEFA Cup with Schalke. After ending his playing career, he worked as an assistant coach among other roles and became a co-opted member of Schalke’s supervisory board in 2021. The Dutchman will leave his position on the supervisory board vacant until the end of the season.
