27 players head to Belek for training camp

FC Schalke 04 are currently on their way to Turkey for their winter training camp. Kees van Wonderen’s team will be in Belek for eight days as they prepare for the second half of the 2. Bundesliga season, which begins with an away game against Eintracht Braunschweig (18/1). 27 players were on the SunExpress plane on Friday afternoon (3/1), including Mika Khadr and Zaid Amoussou-Tchibara from the U19s.

“There are lots of things that we can and want to improve on,” said van Wonderen ahead of the trip to Belek. “Our teamwork, both in defence and attack, is something that’s particularly important. Counter-attacks are decisive in modern football, as well as set pieces. First of all, our aim is to get our fitness levels up again.”

The Royal Blues will be at the Hotel Titanic Deluxe until 10th January, where the club also stayed in January 2023. The training sessions will take place at the Titanic Deluxe Football Center.

Mauro Zalazar, Steve Noode, Janik Bachmann, Amin Younes, Lino Tempelmann, Luca Podlech, Vitalie Becker and Ibrahima Cissé did not make the trip to Turkey.

Zalazar is with Uruguay U20s preparing for the 2025 South American U-20 Championship, which kicks off on 25th January in Venezuela. Noode is currently on trial at Austrian Bundesliga side SCR Altach. Noode is expected to remain there until 12th January and will also take part in a friendly against SSV Ulm 1846 with the side (12/1). In order to allow him the opportunity to earn more match practice, the club is considering a loan deal for the centre-back.

Bachmann and Younes will both continue to complete their rehabilitation in Gelsenkirchen, having both undergone minor surgery on their knees ahead of the winter break. Tempelmann has been allowed to speak to another club and his place on the trip has been taken by Seok-ju Hong from the U23s.

Podlech, Becker and Cissé will train with the U23s for the time being. Becker will be slowly reintegrated into training following his lengthy injury lay-off, while Podlech, who extended his contract at the club until 2028 on Thursday (2/1), will be able to familiarise himself with the team where he will be seeking to gather match practice with in the second half of the season.
