Schalke begin preparations for second half of the season

Head coach Kees van Wonderen’s side gathered for their first training session of the new year on Thursday afternoon (2/1). The Royal Blues will then travel to Turkey on Friday for their winter training camp.

Tobias Mohr and Paul Seguin both returned to team training on Thursday. Mohr had missed the final matches ahead of the winter break due to injury, while Seguin pulled out of the warm-up ahead of the team’s final game of the year at SV Elversberg (4-1 win). Lino Tempelmann did not train due to illness, while Adrian Gantenbein was able to complete an individual session following a short bout with illness. 

Mauro Zalazar will be unavailable for the foreseeable future, as he is away with the Uruguay U20s preparing for the South American U20 Championship. The tournament will begin in Venezuela on 23rd January. 

Noode in Austria, trio training with U23s

Steve Noode is also currently not with the team, as he is set to  take part in a trial at Austrian Bundesliga side SCR Altach on Friday (3/1). Noode is expected to remain there until 12th January and will also take part in a friendly against SSV Ulm 1846 with the side (12/1). In order to allow him the opportunity to earn more match practice, the club is considering a loan deal for the centre-back. 

Janik Bachmann and Amin Younes both continue to work on their comebacks from injury, having both undergone minor surgery on their knees ahead of the winter break. The duo will not travel to Turkey with the team, and will instead continue to complete their rehabilitation in Gelsenkirchen. 

Luca Podlech, Vitalie Becker and Ibrahima Cissé will all begin training with the U23s from Friday. Becker will be slowly reintegrated into training following his lengthy injury lay-off, while Podlech will be able to familiarise himself with the team where he will be seeking to gather match practice with in the second half of the season. 

27-man squad for training camp

Zaid Amoussou-Tchibara and Mika Khadr from the club’s U19s also took part in training on Thursday. The duo will travel to Belek with the side on Friday and train with the first-team squad.

A total of 24 outfield players and three goalkeepers will take part in the team’s training camp in Turkey. The full squad list includes: Christopher Antwi-Adjei, Mehmet-Can Aydin, Aris Bayindir, Taylan Bulut, Anton Donkor, Adrian Gantenbein, Max Grüger, Ilyes Hamache, Justin Heekeren, Ron-Thorben Hoffmann, Emil Højlund, Tomas Kalas, Marcin Kaminski, Kenan Karaman, Michael Langer, Bryan Lasme, Tobias Mohr, Derry John Murkin, Peter Remmert, Felipe Sanchez, Ron Schallenberg, Paul Seguin, Moussa Sylla, Lino Tempelmann, Martin Wasinski, Zaid Amoussou-Tchibara and Mika Khadr.
