Karel Geraerts: Both sides could have won it at the end
S04 head coach Karel Geraerts and his opposite number Christian Titz discussed the 1-1 draw on Sunday (25/8) at the Avnet Arena at the post-match press conference. The two coaches each saw good things from their respective sides, as well things to be worked on. Amin Younes also spoke to the media after his first competitive appearance for the club.
Karel Geraerts:
It was a spectacular game. 2-2 was a fair scoreline against a good opponent. Both sides could have won it at the end – it could have finished 3-2 to them or to us. We started well and scored a really nice goal. We didn’t necessarily deserve to be behind at the break, but ultimately we were. Magdeburg were really dominant in the first 20 minutes of the second half. We defended really well during this period, unlike two weeks ago in Nürnberg, so I think we’ve taken a step in the right direction in this regard. We were brave after this period in the second half, found our way back into the game and created chances. That’s why our equaliser was more than deserved. My team showed a strong mentality. Our substitutes also provided us with some energy too.
Christian Titz:
We were the better team across the whole game, so I’m therefore unhappy with the result. I am pleased with the intensity and commitment my team showed. We made multiple mistakes with the ball at our feet in the first half and invited them onto us, which simply cannot happen. After that, we created lots of good chances and after going 2-1 up and we should have got a third goal to ensure we were really on top. They then equalised due to another error by us. We had two really good opportunities in the closing stages as well.
Amin Younes:
I’m pleased to have come on and to have got some minutes, I’m really thankful to the club and the coach for that. It was nice that I could help the team – our equaliser was really important. My aim is to help Schalke as best I can. I will give my all in training and in every game. I obviously want to pay back the coach’s trust when I get the chance to. We’ve got a great team and we can’t forget where we’ve come from. A lot of players are new and we need to get to know each other, but we’ve got a good foundation to work with.
