Peter Knäbel: Our ideal candidate

Board member for sport Peter Knäbel shared his enthusiasm towards the club’s new head coach in this afternoon’s press conference. “Karel Geraerts was our ideal candidate, so we're really pleased to have secured his services. André Hechelmann: An important factor in our decision

Sporting director André Hechelmann revealed that he felt Karel Geraerts was exactly the kind of coach the club wanted as soon as he met him. “Our conversations were extremely positive straight away. We were immediately on the same page, both as people and when it comes to football. We could sense the huge amount of energy Karel has, as well as the fact that he is extremely excited for this challenge,” said Hechelmann, who, together with Peter Knäbel, spoke to the Belgian for five hours the first time they met one another.

Karel Geraerts can hardly wait to get to work with his team on the pitch for the first time as FC Schalke 04’s head coach. Despite their current position in the table, the 41-year-old sees a lot of potential in the team, which he took an in-detail look at prior to his appointment.

André Hechelmann: Time to turn things around

Until the very end, everyone involved did everything they could to work together with Thomas Reis to help the club find a way out of the bad patch. “However, following the internal discussions held over the past few days, we weren’t confident that the setup that we had was capable of getting us out of the downward spiral and of being successful in the short and medium term. That’s why we came to the conclusion that we had to make a change.” explained André Hechelmann.

Peter Knäbel: A step taken for the good of the club

Hopes that the Royal Blues’ recent form would start to improve were not fulfilled and the club’s sporting management therefore decided to part ways with Thomas Reis and his assistant Markus Gellhaus. Peter Knäbel and sporting director André Hechelmann informed the pair of their decision on Wednesday (27/9). “We spoke to them personally, which was important for us,” revealed Knäbel. Matthias Kreutzer has taken over as interim coach until further notice.
