Final friendly to provide reunion with Victor Pálsson

FC Schalke 04’s final friendly before the second half of the season will be on Saturday (13/1, 13:30 CET) against KAS Eupen at the VELTINS-Arena. The Belgian club’s squad includes Victor Pálsson, an S04 promotion hero from 2022. The Icelandic defensive midfielder has been an Eupen player for six months, starting every game since joining and only missing three minutes in all competitions.

His former teammates are looking forward to seeing him again. “Victor and I often speak to each other,” revealed captain Simon Terodde. “He still follows Schalke closely and supports us from afar.”

The friendships will be put to one side for 90 minutes in Gelsenkirchen at the weekend, even if it’s not a competitive game. “It’s our final friendly, so we want to play well and continue to improve as a team. I saw a few good things against Wolfsburg and Huelva. We can hopefully build on those positives. Unlike during the training camp, the lads should be a lot fresher,” explained head coach Karel Geraerts.

Geraerts stated that he already knows the majority of his starting XI for the game against Hamburger SV next weekend. “There are one or two things to be decided yet though. The match with KAS Eupen could definitely help me with those decisions,” said Geraerts. “The training sessions before HSV will also count towards who gets to start. Everybody has the chance to impress me.”

KAS Eupen, currently coached by former Werder Bremen and VfL Wolfsburg boss Florian Kohfeldt, recently held a training camp in Belek. They are 15th in the Belgian top flight, and resume their season a day after S04 do (21/1 against RWDM).
