Club statement on crowd trouble during away game against Hansa Rostock
FC Schalke 04‘s game against Hansa Rostock on Sunday was interrupted in the first half by ugly scenes in the stands. An investigation into the incident has begun.
Everyone at FC Schalke 04 wishes a speedy recovery to all those injured during the game on Sunday. FC Schalke 04 condemns all forms of violence on and off the pitch. The behaviour in the stands was absolutely unacceptable and the club will take the appropriate action against the perpetrators once they are clearly and unambiguously identified by the authorities. The majority of the travelling fans wanted to enjoy the game peacefully and reacted well to a tense situation.
The club are unable to make a final assessment of the situation while the investigation is still ongoing. Schalke will await the findings of the organising party, in this case Hansa Rostock, and the relevant authorities. FC Schalke 04 remain in contact with Sunday’s hosts and the authorities.
The exchange between parties after the match led to a decision regarding safety being made, which the club wishes to communicate transparently in part due to enquiries made by the media: After the team bus dropped the players off at Rostock airport, it was used to transport some of the travelling fans back to Gelsenkirchen. A defect with one of Schalke’s fan buses meant that it was no longer fit for travel, which meant some of the Schalke fans faced the possibility of having to stay in Rostock. Instead, these fans travelled back to Gelsenkirchen on the team bus, which would’ve been making the journey back without passengers anyway. This course of action was arranged by the club and the fans following a conversation with local police.
FC Schalke 04 is aware of its responsibilities and of its function as a role model. Over the coming days, the club will aim to make its position on the matter unequivocally clear via its social media channels.
