Defeat in opening U19 EURO match for Bulut and Germany

The Germany U19s fells to a 3-0 defeat against the Netherlands U19s in their opening match of the U19 EUROs in Romania on Saturday evening (14/6). Taylan Bulut featured for the full 90 minutes at the Anghel Iordanescu Stadium in Oras Voluntari.

Head coach Hanno Balitsch’s side were on even footing with their opponents for much of the match, managing to put together some strong attacks at the start of the game. Both sides had chances to take the lead, with first the Dutch (28’) and then the Germans (38’) being denied by the woodwork. Shortly before half time, the Netherlands managed to take the lead through Ayoub Oufkir (43’).

Germany managed to generate more of a threat on goal after the break, but struggled to finish their chances. In the closing stages of the match, Balitsch’s side threw everything they had into attack, allowing their opponents to score twice on the break in injury time. Goals from Oufkir and Kees Smit therefore sealed a 3-0 defeat.

Bulut made his 30th appearance for Germany at youth level on Saturday night, and will be back in action against England U19s on Tuesday (17/6, 19:00 CEST). Their final group stage game will be against Norway U19s on Friday (20/6, 19:00 CEST). The top two sides from both groups will advance to the semi-finals on 23rd June, with the final set to be played on 26th June.
