Maximilian Wöber and Austria secure a point after an initial two-goal deficit
Austria managed to defend their lead at the top of the table in the UEFA Nations League on Thursday (1/10) despite initially going two goals down in Ireland. Schalke centre-back Maximilian Wöber was subbed on at the start of the second half in the 2-2 draw at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Junior Adamu did not make an appearance.
Real Betis striker Troy Parrott gave the hosts the lead after twelve minutes, before making it 2-0 with a penalty shortly before half time.
Hoffenheim midfielder Alexander Prass, who also came on as a sub, pulled one back with a left-footed shot (71’) shortly before ex-Schalke attacker Michael Gregoritsch, who currently plays for FC Augsburg, equalised with a free kick (77’). Former Schalke head coach Ralf Rangnick’s team continued to create chances in the closing stages, but did not manage to score a third.
With seven points from three games, Austria are currently top of group 3 in League B, ahead of Kosovo, who are on four points and will be Austria’s next opponents on Sunday (4/10). Kick-off is at 18:00 CEST in Pristina. The Austrians won their first meeting 3-1 last week, during which Junior Adamu scored to make it 2-0.
No minutes for Tanaka
Satoshi Tanaka was not part of Japan’s matchday squad on Thursday (1/10) when they progressed to the final of the Kirin Cup after beating Ecuador 5-4 on penalties. The game at the International Stadium in Yokohama was goalless at the end of normal time.
Japan will face New Zealand in the final of the friendly tournament on Monday (5/10) at 12:30 CEST at the National Stadium in Tokyo. The Oceania side beat Panama 5-3 on penalties in the second semi-final.
