Junior Adamu scores in 3-1 win for Austria

Junior Adamu and Maximilian Wöber had reason to celebrate on Sunday (27/9), as Austria made it back-to-back wins in the UEFA Nations League. Schalke’s number 20 scored to make it 2-0, as Austria ran out 3-1 winners against Kosovo in Vienna. It was also Adamu’s first senior international goal on what was his tenth appearance for Austria.

Teammate Xaver Schlager sent a long ball through to Hoffenheim’s Patrick Wimmer, who laid it across to Adamu. The 25-year-old only needed to tap it in order to add to Austria’s lead in first-half injury time.

Together with Schalke teammate Maximilian Wöber, who earned his 32nd cap on Sunday night, the duo were subbed out amidst well-deserved applause in the 58th minute. The two had both been named in the starting line-up by head coach Ralf Rangnick, in front of a crowd of 47,000 spectators at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion.

David Affengruber (23’/Fulham FC) and Carney Chukwuemeka (61’/Borussia Dortmund) also got on the scoresheet for Austria. Edon Zhegrova (Juventus) converted a penalty in the 83rd minute to score a consolation goal for the visitors.

Austria will be back in action on Thursday (1/10), as they take on Ireland at the Aviva Stadium.

Ayhan an unused substitute against Ukraine

Türkiye U21s threw away a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 against Ukraine U21s in their penultimate U21 qualifier on Saturday (26/9). Mertcan Ayhan was an unused substitute at the DVTK Stadium in Miskolc, Hungary.

Emirhan Ilkhan (12’/Besiktas) and Ali Habesoglu (33’/Trabzonspor) scored for Türkiye, while Danylo Krevsun (47’/Borussia Dortmund) and Ramik Hadzhyiev (82’/FC Dnipro) got on the scoresheet for Ukraine.

Türkiye currently find themselves four points behind group leaders Croatia, with one game left to play. They are therefore unable to finish first in their group. Türkiye will take on Hungary U21s in their final qualifier on Tuesday (6/10), where they will aim to keep hold of second place.

The nine group winners and the best second-placed side will all qualify directly for the 2027 U21 EUROs in Albania and Serbia. The remaining eight second-placed sides will enter into a play-off round to determine the final four sides that will also take part in next summer’s tournament.

Nine Schalke players called up for international duty

The nine Schalke players who have joined up with their countries have a packed schedule in the first international break of the year. While Edin Džeko, Nikola Katic, Junior Adamu and Maximilian Wöber compete in the UEFA Nations League, Adil Aouchiche and Soufiane El-Faouzi will kick off the second round of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Algeria and Morocco respectively.
