Wins for Aouchiche and Hwang, Ayhan reaches play-offs

Three Schalke players were still in action for their national teams on Tuesday (6/10), as the international break drew to a close. Adil Aouchiche (Algeria), Hee Chan Hwang (South Korea) and Mertcan Ayhan (Türkiye U21) all started for their respective sides. schalke04.de has summarised all the key moments from the trio’s matches.

Aouchiche plays 61 minutes in 2-1 win

Adil Aouchiche made his first start for the Algeria national team in their friendly against Niger. At Stade Hocine-Aït-Ahmed in Tizi Ouzou, “Les Verts” came from behind to win 2-1 after Konan N’Dri of US Lecce had put the visitors ahead after 12 minutes. Mohamed Belloumi (Hull City) levelled in the 53rd minute, before Dortmund’s Ramy Bensebaini scored the winning goal from the penalty spot (72’).

The Schalke midfielder played 61 minutes in his third international appearance, having previously made two substitute appearances. Aouchiche played as one of two holding midfielders.

Hwang earns his 85th cap

Hee Chan Hwang made his 85th appearance for South Korea in their friendly against Uzbekistan. Schalke’s number seven played 71 minutes on the left side of midfield as his side secured a 2-0 victory at Yongin Mireu Stadium.

Heung-Min Son (6’/Los Angeles FC) and Se-Hun Oh (60’/Shimizu S-Pulse) scored the goals.

Ayhan keeps U21 EURO hopes alive

Mertcan Ayhan and Türkiye U21 drew their final Group H match in qualifying for the U21 European Championship. The game against Hungary at Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium in Istanbul ended 0-0.

The Schalke academy product lined up on the right side of a back-four. Ayhan was subbed off after 82 minutes.

Türkiye’s youngsters finished in second place in Group H with 13 points from eight matches, a position that takes them into the play-offs. The first and second legs are scheduled to be played between 9th and 17th November. The UEFA European Under-21 Championship will take place in Albania and Serbia in summer 2027.

Austria remain unbeaten in the UEFA Nations League after a 1-1 draw against Kosovo on Sunday (4/10). Maximilian Wöber was subbed in the 77th minute, with Austria netting an equaliser shortly after. Junior Adamu, who had been on the scoresheet in the 3-1 win in the reverse fixture against Kosovo, was an unused substitute.

Džeko bows out as Bosnia and Herzegovina draw with Sweden

Edin Džeko made his final appearance for Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday evening (2/10), bringing the curtain down on a remarkable international career. The country’s record appearance-maker started against Sweden at the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica and was substituted in the 63rd minute to a huge ovation. The UEFA Nations League game finished 1-1, with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s equaliser coming from a cross aimed towards Nikola Katic.

Edin Džeko set for 152nd and final international appearance

It promises to be an emotional night, both for the supporters in the stands at the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica and, above all, for Edin Džeko himself. After almost two decades with the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team, the striker will represent his country for the final time when they face Sweden in the UEFA Nations League on Friday (2/10, 20:45 CEST). The long-serving captain will bring the curtain down on his international career after the game.
