Nikola Katic and Bosnia and Herzegovina defeat Poland

Nikola Katic and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national side rounded off the first international break of the season on Monday (5/10), picking up points in the UEFA Nations League against Poland in Zenica. The Schalke defender helped his team to a 1-0 victory.

Nikola Katic celebrates alongside his Bosnian teammates in front of the barrier, with fans cheering on the other side.

Katic again earned a place in Sergej Barbarez’s starting XI against Poland, having also started the previous two games against Romania and Sweden. The defender had a moment of brilliance just before half time, clearing a shot from Sebastian Szymanski off the line. Otherwise, the clash between the two sides level on points in Group 4 of League B largely lived up to expectations, with both teams enjoying an even share of possession.

In the second half, the game swung in the hosts’ favour late on, when they were awarded a penalty in the 84th minute. Ivan Basic made no mistake from the spot to seal a 1-0 victory, leaving Bosnia with eight points and in second place behind Sweden. The win saw Poland drop four points behind their opponents on the night. Katic and his teammates will return to Nations League action in November, with the return fixtures against Sweden (14/11) and Romania (17/11).
