Nikola Katic earns UEFA Nations League result with Bosnia and Herzegovina

Nikola Katic was in UEFA Nations League action for Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday (25/9), putting in an impressive performance as his side picked up a point in Poland. Adil Aouchiche and Soufiane El-Faouzi were also on international duty but remained unused in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying. schalke04.de looks back at how the S04 contingent got on.

Katic celebrates the clean sheet with his defensive teammates

Nikola Katic helped Bosnia and Herzegovina pick up a point away from home in their opening UEFA Nations League fixture. Their League B Group 4 clash with Poland ended goalless. The Schalke centre-back was named in Sergej Barbarez’s starting XI at the Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw and produced a strong defensive display on his 22nd international appearance, playing the full 90 minutes.

Edin Džeko, meanwhile, wasn’t part of the squad. The striker has scored 73 goals in 151 appearances for his country and has announced that Friday’s (2/10) game against Sweden will be his final appearance in national team colours.

There is another tough test before then though for Bosnia and Herzegovina, who reached the round of 32 at the World Cup, as they travel to Romania for a UEFA Nations League clash on Monday (28/9).

S04 duo unused in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying

Adil Aouchiche (Algeria) and Soufiane El-Faouzi (Morocco) were both unused substitutes as the second round of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations got underway. Both watched on from the bench for the full 90 minutes.

Algeria began their Group I campaign with a 3-1 win over Zambia. Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jaouen Hadjam put Les Verts ahead after just two minutes at the Stade Hocine Ait Ahmed in Boukhalfa. Fashion Sakala of Al Fayha equalised shortly before the hour mark, before Bayer Leverkusen’s Ibrahim Maza restored Algeria’s lead in the 67th minute. Feyenoord winger Anis Hadj Moussa added a third seven minutes later to complete the scoring.

Morocco beat Gabon 2-0 in Group A. Manchester United’s Noussair Mazraoui opened the scoring at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah on 36 minutes, before Al Ain’s Soufiane Rahimi added a second in the 84th.

Algeria are next in action away to Burundi on Tuesday (29/9), while Morocco travel to Lesotho for their next qualifier.
