Team unity the key to success

It’s has been a tough few weeks and an even tougher season, with the Royal Blues slipping further and further down the table after a rocky Rückrunde. For all those reasons and more, yesterday’s derby victory felt doubly sweet. Firstly, because our Bundesliga survival became even likelier, but also because of how it will have soothed the souls of all the Schalke fans who have endured so much this season.

First a party on the team bus, then celebrations with the fans

“Derby winners, derby winners!” was the chant coming from the away dressing room even an hour after the full-time whistle on Saturday. In the midst of the celebrations was Daniel Caligiuri, who got himself on the scoresheet twice. When asked what plans he had for the evening, the 31 year old replied, “We’ll see. But for sure there will be two or three beers involved!”

Huub Stevens: Good periods in a game aren’t enough in a derby

The sporting signs could be a lot better ahead of the 154th competitive Revierderby on Saturday (27/4, 15:30 CEST). FC Schalke currently sit 15th in the Bundesliga table, only six points ahead of the relegation play-off position with four games to go. Dortmund, on the other hand, are only a point behind table-topping FC Bayern and are still hopeful of winning the title.

Christian Heidel: Moaning will solve nothing

It would be safe to say that a team couldn’t be any more unlucky with injuries than Schalke right now. Breel Embolo, Mark Uth, Steven Skrzybski and Franco Di Santo were all ruled out of the derby, while Guido Burgstaller had to be taken off in the first half. Cedric Teuchert, the only striker on the bench, is still not 100% fit after his injury and has only trained two or three times.
