Simon Terodde to end his playing career at the end of this season – farewell on Saturday
The 2. Bundesliga’s all-time record goalscorer has announced the end of his career. Simon Terodde will hang up his boots at the end of the current season. The 36-year-old striker informed the club of his decision on Thursday (9/5).
Terodde told his teammates that he would be calling time on his career this afternoon. “After 16 years as a professional footballer, it’s time for a new chapter of my life. I could sense the time had come for me to retire,” explained the Bocholt-born forward. “I would like to thank everyone – my teammates, coaches, the club staff and the fans. Schalke 04 is a special club and will always be that to me.”
Simon can look back on an incredible career. He experienced so many special moments at various big clubs, won promotion on several occasions and broke records too – he can rightly be proud of what he’s achieved.
“Simon can look back on an incredible career. He experienced so many special moments at various big clubs, won promotion on several occasions and broke records too – he can rightly be proud of what he’s achieved. During his three years at Schalke, Simon has shown both on and off the pitch what is important in football: dedication, passion and the hunger to score goals and win games,” said sporting director Marc Wilmots and CEO Matthias Tillmann together. “We have told Simon that the door to Schalke is open for him, but he should first spend time with his family and decide what he wants to do in the ‘second half’ of his career.”
All-time top goalscorer of the second division
Terodde moved to the Royal Blues in 2021 following Schalke’s relegation from the Bundesliga during the COVID-19 pandemic. His arrival sparked hope among S04 fans that the club would bounce back from this dark time and get off to a successful start in the second tier. Schalke fans turned out to be correct in their thinking, as Terodde netted 30 goals in the 2. Bundesliga and fired the Royal Blues to the title in the 2021/22 season. His goals against Sandhausen and St. Pauli towards the end of the season were particularly memorable, helping the side secure important points in the title race.
He became the all-time top goalscorer in the 2. Bundesliga in that campaign. He currently sits alone at the top of the list, with 177 goals in 310 appearances.
Unfortunately, he was unable to fulfil his desire to move on from the Royal Blues on a high after the Knappen narrowly missed out on survival in the 2022/23 Bundesliga season, so he decided to stay on with the club into the current campaign.
Terodde will captain Schalke for the final time at home when the Royal Blues take on Hansa Rostock this Saturday (11/5). He will also receive an official send-off in front of the Schalke fans, with more information on this to follow.
