Mauro Zalazar joins NK Kustošija

Mauro Zalazar has left FC Schalke 04 to join Croatian second-division side NK Kustošija. The 21-year-old had previously spent the second half of the 2025/26 season on loan at SC Braga U23s.

“We would like to thank Mauro for his efforts and wish him all the best in Zagreb, both on and off the pitch,” said S04’s head of professional football, Youri Mulder.

Zalazar joined the Royal Blues in summer 2024 from the Granada CF U19s. During his time at Schalke, the Uruguay youth international featured once in the 2. Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. He also made 18 appearances in the Regionalliga West for the club’s U23s, scoring twice.

Nikola Katic is back auf Schalke. Following his time off after the World Cup, he continued his pre-season testing on Monday morning (3/8), having begun the assessments on Sunday afternoon. Katic will join the team on the pitch for Tuesday morning’s training session.

Homegrown defender Mertcan Ayhan signs new long-term contract

FC Schalke 04 have extended Gelsenkirchen-born defender Mertcan Ayhan’s contract until 30th June 2030, securing the long-term future of another player developed in the club’s academy, the Knappenschmiede. The 19-year-old’s new deal does not include a release clause, further underlining the club’s commitment to continuity in their squad planning and to developing players from the Knappenschmiede.
