Kees van Wonderen: We’re at the start of a process

Head coach Kees van Wonderen, captain Kenan Karaman and goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann spoke after S04’s 1-0 defeat to Hannover 96 on Saturday (19th October). Here are all of their most important quotes.

Kees van Wonderen:

It wasn’t enough today. We knew we were facing a strong and well-organised team. It’s not easy to score goals away at Hannover. We’re at the start of a process. It always hurts to lose a game, but I’m a realist and I know it’ll take a bit of time for everything to click, even though you don’t get much time in football. We’ll analyse the game and then carry on on our path. We need to steadily improve over the next few weeks.

Stefan Leitl:

I’m happy with how we played. The early goal was good for us. We started with intent. We pressed really well on many occasions, which started a lot of attacks. We have to work on wrapping up the game earlier when we’re so dominant.

Kenan Karaman:

Conceding an early goal from a set piece was not at all ideal for us. We knew that Hannover were good defensively, and we struggled to create chances. At the end, we kept on piling forward in search of the equaliser, but Hannover defended well. We just didn’t create enough chances over the full 90 minutes. We had some at the end, but we couldn’t take them to get something out of the game. Kees van Wonderen has been trying to inject energy into the squad in his first few days. We all have to grow together. I hope we’ll be able to put the coach’s ideas into practice as soon as possible.

Ron-Thorben Hoffmann:

It was a really disappointing start to the game. Firstly, we didn’t defend well on the flank, and then we didn’t in the middle. We’d been talking all week about how Hannover are dangerous from balls into the first man. We defended well for long stretches afterwards, but we have to be more dangerous going forward.
