Paul Seguin: An enjoyable first few days

Several Bundesliga clubs expressed an interest in Paul Seguin over the past few weeks, however the 28-year-old midfielder decided to join FC Schalke 04 instead. This was because of the “fantastic conversations with the club. Their plan and ideas totally convinced me to come here.” He added: “Schalke are one of the biggest clubs in Germany and I’m proud to now be a part of it all.”

Seguin has been really impressed by his first few days in his new home. One particular highlight was over 2,400 fans turning up for the first training session of pre-season, with a number of them requesting Schalke’s new number 7’s autograph.

Looking to return to the Bundesliga

“The fans get behind the team, in good and bad times,” said Seguin. “The VELTINS-Arena can be a real fortress. Anything is possible with the support at the stadium and a lot of Schalke fans follow the team on the road too.” The new signing from Union Berlin wants to help the Royal Blues get back on track after the pain of relegation just a month or so ago. “I will try to give my best every day,” promised the man from Magdeburg. “I want to lead from the front and help us achieve our goals. However, nobody ever achieved promotion by just talking about it.”

Promotion back to the Bundesliga is Seguin’s main target for this season. “It won’t be easy, I know the second division,” warned the midfielder. “We’ve got a lot of quality in the team and have what it takes to get promoted. It’s important that we keep up a high intensity in every game, nothing will be handed to us on a plate.”

Seguin’s father Wolfgang is a legend in East German football

The midfielder reported that he has been given a warm welcome by his teammates. “I’m generally someone that quickly integrates into new surroundings anyway. The lads are all positive and the first few days have been enjoyable.” The 28-year-old also felt at home over the last 12 months in the capital city: “I was told by Union Berlin that I probably wouldn’t be playing much this season. It was hard to hear initially, but ultimately it was at least honest,” said Seguin, who featured in 23 competitive games for FCU last season.

I obviously spoke to my family about it. They are pleased that I’m now at Schalke.

Those close to Seguin were 100% behind his move to Gelsenkirchen. “I obviously spoke to my family about it. They are pleased that I’m now at Schalke,” he revealed. Seguin has chosen the number 7, a number that his father Wolfgang, a legend in East German football, also wore. The former East Germany international played over 400 games for 1. FC Magdeburg and won the 1974 UEFA Cup Winners‘ Cup with them.
