Benjamin Stambouli: An unacceptable result

Benjamin Stambouli’s comeback was overshadowed by last night’s heavy defeat. 328 days on from his last Bundesliga appearance, Stambouli and his teammates lost 8-0 in their season opener against against defending champions Bayern München on Friday (18/9).

“We play football because it’s fun. Today, it wasn’t fun,” the 30-year-old said after the match. “We were playing against the best team in the Bundesliga – in my opinion, Bayern are also the best team in Europe, if not the world. But, a result like that is still unacceptable from us.”

There were several things that failed to work for us. In contrast, nearly everything seemed to be working for our opponent.

According to Stambouli, Bayern are a team that will punish you for every mistake. “There were several things that failed to work for us. In contrast, nearly everything seemed to be working for our opponents,” he said. He added that the team were too naive in defence towards the end. a“We always have the desire to come back. After conceding the fifth goal, we should have probably just stayed back and defended, but that’s not part of our mentality,” Stambouli said.

Now, the team will have to put Friday night’s crushing defeat behind them as soon as possible, although it likely won’t be easy. “We will need to focus on what’s ahead. I’m convinced that we will put forth a completely different showing against Bremen next week. We have a strong mentality within the team,” he said. “I believe in us!”
