World Cup qualifiers: Darko Churlinov’s North Macedonia to face Germany

Six Royal Blues have been selected to play for their national teams during the upcoming international break. Darko Churlinov, Ko Itakura and Victor Pálsson will be taking part in important World Cup qualifiers, whilst Malick Thiaw and Mehmet Can Aydin have been called up for Germany’s national youth teams, and Yaroslav Mikhailov will be involved in a friendly tournament with Russia’s U19s.

Malick Thiaw had three reasons to celebrate on Tuesday evening with the Germany U21 national team. Thiaw recorded his second win in as many caps for the U21 side, in addition to providing a goal and assist in his side’s 3-1 win over Latvia.

Schalke’s academy product Mehmet Can Aydin played the full 90 minutes of the Germany U20s 1-1 friendly draw with Norway in Zwickau. This was Aydin’s second cap for the U20s and his 26th in total for the DFB youth teams.

Darko Churlinov plays the full 90 minutes in 2-2 draw with Iceland

Darko Churlinov featured in a World Cup qualifier for North Macedonia on Sunday (5/9), playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-2 draw against Iceland. However, he wasn’t able to come up against his Royal Blue teammate Victor Pálsson in Reykjavik. The 30-year-old was an unused substitute for the match.

The USMNT won the Gold Cup on Sunday night/Monday morning, beating Mexico 1-0 in the final in extra time (2/8). Striker Matthew Hoppe started the game, coming off in the dying embers of extra time.

Matthew Hoppe reaches the Gold Cup final

Matthew Hoppe and the US men’s national team booked their place in the Gold Cup final during the early hours of Friday morning. 20,500 people watched on at the Q2 stadium in Austin, Texas as the Schalke man and his international teammates beat next year’s World Cup hosts Qatar 1-0 in the semi-final.

Matthew Hoppe sends USMNT to the semi-finals of the Gold Cup

Matthew Hoppe scored the winner to send the USMNT through to the semi-finals of the Gold Cup on Monday night (26/7). The striker netted the game-winning goal for his side in a 1-0 victory over Jamaica. It was the 20-year-old's first ever international goal in his third appearance for the side, as he also picked up the Man of the Match award.

A 1-0 win over Canada saw the USMNT and Matthew Hoppe top Group B in the Gold Cup on Sunday (18/7). Schalke’s striker came on for his second cap in the 75th minute, replacing Gyasi Zardes.
