Kees van Wonderen: We’re all focused and looking to improve

FC Schalke 04 came from behind twice to earn a draw against partner club FC Aarau. Head coach Kees van Wonderen and goalscorer Ron Schallenberg spoke after the game.

Kees van Wonderen:

Of course we’re not where we want to be yet after only five days together. Aarau played well. They created problems for us and that’s what we were hoping for.

We’ve worked on a lot of things over the past few days. How will we defend, how will we set up, how should we be organised at set pieces? These are the first few steps. Obviously not everything’s going to be perfect after this short time. We want to keep going on this path. We’re all focused and looking to improve, and we’ve got to.

Ron Schallenberg:

I’m pleased with my goal, but I also have to say that we didn’t put in a vintage performance, either in the first or the second half. I think you could see already how the new coach wants us to play. We didn’t always have an end product though. We’ve trained very vigorously, but there’s still a lot to do. You expect that when a new head coach comes in during the international break. He’s very communicative and has a clear plan and ideology. He’s been drilling this into us again and again. That’s exactly what we need.

You could see that we’ve been on an upward trajectory over the past two weeks. If we can build on that and implement the coach’s plan even better, then I’m optimistic.
