Orange Day: FC Schalke 04 take part in the International Day against Violence against Women

With the campaign “Orange The World”, the United Nations has been drawing attention to the theme of violence against women since 1991 with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women takes place today on the 25th November. This year, UN Women Germany, are using the slogan “Stop Violence against Women”, and the Royal Blues are taking part in the campaign with their own video.

The facts and figures regarding violence against women in Germany paint a horrifying picture: in 2020, 148,000 women victims of violence from their partners. More than nine women are physically or sexually abused by their partner every single day. The BKA reported 359 women who were victims of attempted murder or manslaughter by their (ex-)partner, and 139 were killed by their (ex-)partner.

As a result, UN Women Deutschland has put forward a catalogue of demands which FC Schalke 04 have endorsed. Among the demands is the recognition of gender specific violence as structural discrimination and for politics in Germany as well as Europe to be shaped in a feminist way. The empowerment and protection of women and girls in the face of gender specific violence has to be an essential part of this.
