Aymen Barkok joins Schalke until the end of the season

FC Schalke 04 have signed midfielder Aymen Barkok on a deal until the end of the season. The 26-year-old arrives from 1. FSV Mainz 05 and will wear the number 25 shirt for the Royal Blues.

“Aymen is a midfielder than can provide our game with a new dynamic from several different positions,” said Youri Mulder, director of professional football. “He has the experience of over 100 Bundesliga games and won’t take long to settle in here at Schalke.”

Barkok commented: “I’m really pleased to have been given the chance to show what I’m capable of at Schalke over the next few months. I want to put in some good performances to help the team and the club as much as I possibly can.”

The Morocco international played for SG Praunhein, Rot-Weiß Frankfurt and Kickers Offenbach as a youngster, before moving to Eintracht Frankfurt in 2013. He made his Bundesliga debut for the Eagles in 2016 and was part of the squad that won the DFB-Pokal in 2018 and the UEFA Europa League in 2022. The 1.88m tall midfielder went on loan to Fortuna Düsseldorf from 2018 to 2020 and then signed for 1. FSV Mainz 05 ahead of the 2022/23 season. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Hertha BSC. Barkok represented Germany U21s before switching his allegiances to Morocco, for whom he has won 18 caps in total.
