FC Schalke 04 relieve head coach Dimitrios Grammozis of his duties

FC Schalke 04’s sporting management came to the decision on Sunday (6/3) to change the club’s head coach. Dimitrios Grammozis is no longer in charge with immediate effect, whilst his assistant Sven Piepenbrock and goalkeeping coach Wil Coort have also departed the club.

“We have come to a point in the season where big decisions need to be made. We no longer believed that we would have a high chance of achieving our goal of returning to the Bundesliga with the current setup. We therefore decided that the team needed a fresh impulse for the end of the season,” said sporting director Rouven Schröder.

“The team have lacked the required consistency, the results and especially the performances since the start of the year. Teams that want to go up need this consistency,” explained Peter Knäbel, board member for sport and communication. “We still believe in the quality the squad has. However, in order to be successful in a promotion race, we need to continuously see development, which hasn’t been the case.”

“Dimitrios Grammozis took charge of FC Schalke 04 during a very challenging time, and was able to stabilise the team after relegation and the subsequent rebuild in 2. Bundesliga. We wish him all the best for the future,” said both club officials.

The team will take part in a recovery session on Sunday as planned. The club will share further information about its next steps on Monday (7/3).
