Attacker Junior Adamu joins FC Schalke 04

Junior Adamu is set to add intensity and flexibility to the Royal Blues’ attack after completing a move from SC Freiburg to FC Schalke 04. The 25-year-old, who has won nine caps for Austria, has signed a contract until 30th June 2029. Adamu spent the second half of last season on loan at Scottish giants Celtic, where he celebrated winning both the league title and the Scottish Cup.

“In Junior, we’re strengthening the squad with a player who fits the demands of the way we want to play. He works hard off the ball and gives his teammates an option with quick runs in behind. Junior is a team player who can show his strengths in several attacking positions and across different systems,” explained Schalke’s director of professional football Youri Mulder.

“Every conversation made it clear to me why the head coach and those in charge here wanted me to be part of the team. The trust shown by the club and the clear idea of how they want to play were ultimately the reasons why I wanted to play for Schalke and their passionate fans,” commented Junior Adamu.

Born in Kano, Nigeria, Junior Adamu moved to Austria at the age of one. As a youth player, he represented Grazer Sportvereinigung Wacker and Grazer AK, among others, before joining RB Salzburg, where he continued his development in their academy. He initially played for feeder club FC Liefering in Austria’s second tier, before spending the second half of the 2020/21 season on loan at Swiss top-flight side FC St. Gallen.

Adamu then went on to make 84 appearances for RB Salzburg across domestic and European competitions, winning two Austrian league titles with the club, scoring 23 goals and setting up a further 11. SC Freiburg signed the Austria international in 2023 and he made 67 appearances for them, scoring seven goals and providing four assists.
