U19 captain Luca Vozar steps up to Schalke’s first-team squad
A true product of the Knappenschmiede youth academy has made the step up to Schalke’s first-team squad: Luca Vozar, who has been at S04 for eleven seasons, is now part of head coach Miron Muslic’s side. The Bottrop-born midfielder will wear the number 38 in the senior squad.
Vozar came through every age group in the Knappenschmiede youth academy from U9 level onwards. Before that, he spent three years playing for SpVgg Sterkrade-Nord.
Last season, the left-footed midfielder, who has been a proud Schalke member since he was three months old, led the U19s out as captain. He followed in the footsteps of his former teammate Mertcan Ayhan, who wore the armband for the U19s the year before and has been a permanent member of the first-team squad for the past year.
Vozar made 25 appearances in the DFB Youth League under coach Norbert Elgert last season, scoring nine goals. The 19-year-old also won the U19 Westfalenpokal, scoring a hat-trick and set up another goal in the 5-2 victory over VfL Bochum in the final.
