Centre-back Maximilian Wöber joins FC Schalke 04
FC Schalke 04 have secured the services of experienced centre-back Maximilian Wöber. The 28-year-old was most recently under contract at Leeds United, having spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Bundesliga outfit SV Werder Bremen. Wöber’s career also includes stints at Borussia Mönchengladbach, RB Salzburg, Sevilla FC, Ajax and Rapid Vienna.
“Maximilian Wöber joins us with the experience of more than 170 top-flight games, and his time in Mönchengladbach and Bremen means he is already familiar with the Bundesliga. We are convinced that he will be able to rediscover his best form with us. Our coaching staff, together with Miron Muslic, will work closely with him. As a player, his attributes give us the flexibility to use him in a number of different defensive set-ups,” explained Youri Mulder, director of professional football at S04.
Wöber has already arrived in the Stubai Valley, where Schalke are currently taking part in a pre-season training camp, and completed his medical and performance testing on Tuesday. The centre-back has now put pen to paper on a contract dated until 2027 with the Royal Blues. “Schalke 04 proved a very exciting opportunity for me right from the start,” said Wöber. “After some really positive talks, I’m looking forward to taking on a new challenge at a very special club, who were deservedly promoted. Playing in the Bundesliga for Schalke poses an exciting challenge. I would now like to settle in as quickly as possible and get to know my new teammates.”
