S04 lose in Porto, but go through to the Last 16

FC Schalke 04 fell to a 3-1 defeat on Wednesday evening to FC Porto but still qualified for the Last 16 of the Champions League. Earlier in the day, Galatasaray lost 2-0 to Lokomotiv Moscow which meant that Schalke 04 had already qualified for the Last 16 before they had even kicked off their own game. Winning the group however, is now not possible as FC Porto are not reachable at the top of the table with only one game to go.

Nabil Bentaleb: I sense plenty of positive development

Nabil Bentaleb has no secrets to hide regarding his disappointment at Schalke’s five Bundesliga defeats to start the season. “That got to me a bit,” said the midfielder. Despite the losing the streak, the team continued to believe in itself and worked hard. They have been rewarded for this effort in recent weeks. “I sense plenty of positive development at the club,” said the Algerian.

A very convincing performance

The Royal Blues will be playing European football after the winter break. It is not yet clear in which competition, but the goal, at least according to Christian Heidel, is to be in the last 16 of the Champions League. “It would be a bit odd if we said we want to go into the Europa League”, said the sporting director. “After the win over Galatasaray, we are now in a great position to qualify for the next round.”

Domenico Tedesco: Galatasaray are even stronger away from home

The Royal-Blues could have taken a victory from their trip to Istanbul two weeks ago. Now, Schalke 04 prepare to welcome Galatasaray in their fourth Champions League group stage match on Tuesday, 6th November (21:00 CET). A victory against the Turkish champions would give the Royal-Blues a strong chance at progressing to the last 16 stage of the competition. However, Schalke head coach Domenico Tedesco is expecting a tough test at home to a strong Galatasaray side.

Schalke go home disappointed, but still positive

One of the strongest performances of the season wasn’t rewarded with a victory. Despite the fact that Schalke dominated Turkish champions Galatasaray, the Royal Blues had to ultimately settle for a point.
