Guido Burgstaller working on his comeback

Guido Burgstaller has travelled to the training camp in Benidorm, but has not been in the thick of it, instead spending his time in the weights room and doing fitness sessions. While his teammates prepare for the second half of the season, the attacker is preparing and working on his comeback. In a break from training, the 29-year-old spoke about his journey back to full fitness.

Burgstaller: Out until after the winter break

Guido Burgstaller picked up an injury during the derby against BVB and has been ruled out until after the winter break. It is unsure whether he will be fit to start for the second round of Bundesliga games. He has been diagnosed with a calf and Achilles tendon injury.

A good feeling going into the derby

Shortly after the final whistle in the game against Hoffenheim, Schalke started looking forward to the next game. Everyone's focus is now on a game that hasn’t even been played yet. The Revierderby will take place during the upcoming match day. The 1-1 draw in Sinsheim didn’t leave the Royal Blues overjoyed, however they will feel optimistic in their preparations for the derby.

Steven Skrzybski: An amazing day

Domenico Tedesco was beaming after Schalke’s 5-2 win over 1. FC Nürnberg. His opposite number Michael Köllner was obviously disappointed, and had expected more. Steven Skrzybski was perhaps the happiest man of all, after getting a brace on his first start for the club. Guido Burgstaller was also among the goalscorers, coming back to haunt his former club.

“The Bremen defeat hasn’t ruined our excitement for this game”

These are the kind of games that Guido Burgstaller and his teammates worked so hard for last year. “We worked our socks off last season to be able to take part in the Champions League,” said the striker. “Therefore we want to be able to enjoy these kinds of evenings”.

FC Schalke 04 suffered a 2-0 home defeat on Matchday 8 to Werder Bremen. Domenico Tedesco felt the Green-Whites deserved their victory and praised their efficient and clinical performance. Guido Burgstaller and Naldo were frustrated with the missed chances.

Victories for S04 internationals

Alexander Nübel and Cedric Teuchert put in strong performances as Germany U21s beat Norway to qualify for the UEFA U21 Euros in Italy and San Marino. Guido Burgstaller, Alessandro Schöpf and Nabil Bentaleb all won their respective games too.

“We have a great bunch here”

Domenico Tedesco was clearly at ease after his team’s 2-0 win. The head coach praised the improved second half performance and stressed how important the first goal was for the win. Friedhelm Funkel was disappointed with Fortuna’s big chance wasted in the first half. Guido Burgstaller and Weston McKennie discussed their goals and the closeness of the squad.

Domenico Tedesco seemed more at ease at the press conference after Schalke beat Mainz 1-0. FSV head coach, Sandro Schwarz, on the other hand, was annoyed that his team failed to take a point which he felt would have been deserved. Goalscorer Alessandro Schöpf and his teammate Guido Burgstaller joked about the former's winning goal.

High five! Schalke duo shine during U21 win
