FC Schalke 04 bids farewell to eight first-team players

The last few months have been intensive for FC Schalke 04, whose courageous efforts to catch up to and surpass the points tallies of those teams around them in the relegation battle were sadly not rewarded with the retention of S04’s Bundesliga status. As a result, several players are set to leave the club.

Maya Yoshida: I always believed in us

Schalke have conceded just one goal from six games in the second half of the season, an impressive feat. On top of that excellent defensive record, Thomas Reis’ side are now unbeaten in six games too after winning 2-0 in Bochum on Saturday (4/3). One key figure has been defender Maya Yoshida, who has started all these matches and been solid at the back alongside Moritz Jenz and in front of goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann.

Maya Yoshida: We’re moving on, we’re looking ahead, we can do it!

Maya Yoshida had a strong tackle percentage on Friday (10/2) and was a big reason why FC Schalke 04 didn’t concede against VfL Wolfsburg for the third game in a row. The Japanese player was rarely beaten both in the air and on the ground, so that one of the most prolific attacking line-ups in the Bundesliga (VfL had scored 14 goals in their first four games in 2023) left the VELTINS-Arena empty handed.
