Barkok trains for the first time, pair working individually
Aymen Barkok, who joined the club from 1. FSV Mainz 05 on the final day of the winter transfer window, trained for the first time as a Schalke player on Tuesday (4/2). The 26-year-old wasn’t in full training however, with the midfielder suffering from a cold in recent days.
Marcin Kaminski is also not currently training with the rest of the team. The centre-back had some dental work done at the start of the week and is working individually after consulting the medical team.
Another player not currently in team training is Paul Seguin. The central midfielder came off at half time in the game against 1. FC Magdeburg due to back problems. Regardless of this issue, Seguin will not feature on Sunday (9/2) away against 1. FC Köln. He picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Magdeburg and is therefore suspended.
Peter Remmert and Vitalie Becker will train with the U23s until further notice. The two youngsters featured for Jakob Fimpel’s side in the goalless draw in Rödinghausen at the weekend. Their next game in the fourth division is at home to 1. FC Bocholt on Saturday (8/2) at the Parkstadion.
Zalazar and Uruguay into the final stage of the South American U-20 Championship
Mauro Zalazar is still away with Uruguay at the South American U-20 Championship. The midfielder’s side won Group A, with the Schalke youngster starting three of their four games (2-1 against Chile, 6-0 against Paraguay and 2-0 against Peru). The 19-year-old, along with a number of other starters, didn’t feature in their 1-0 defeat to hosts Venezuela last time out, as Uruguay were already assured of top spot in their group.
Zalazar and his teammates now have five more games to come in the final stage. The three best teams from both Group A and B will now come up against one another. ‘La Celeste’ begin with a match against Brazil on Tuesday night (4/2), before taking on Argentina (7/2), Chile (11/2), Paraguay (13/2) and Colombia (16/2). The nation which finishes the final stage with the most points will be crowned U-20 South American champions, while the top four teams will earn a place at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile later this year.
