Ron Schallenberg: There were one or two moments where we should have shot

Head coach Karel Geraerts, captain Kenan Karaman and Ron Schallenberg gave their thoughts on the 2-0 defeat at Karlsruher SC on Friday night (13/9).

Karel Geraerts:

Just like every Schalke fan, we’re disappointed. It was a good performance at home by KSC in the opening 15 minutes, then we defended well until their goal in first-half injury time. The goal was too soft and came at a bad time right before the break. Karlsruhe could have made it 2-0 in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Kenan Karaman unfortunately couldn’t equalise with his chance. We need to be more clinical in the box.

Christian Eichner:

The first 15 minutes were really good by us. However, we failed to create a lot of clear-cut chances in the first half. We got in behind early on, but the final pass wasn’t good enough for us to get a shot off. It was really important that we took the lead just before half time. We failed to make it 2-0 after the break. It was a convincing and mature performance overall.

Kenan Karaman:

We prepared well for the game during the week and did a lot of the things we had set out to do in the first half. We wanted to be more compact and solid in defence by keeping things tighter. We managed to do that for large parts of the first half. We cannot afford to concede a goal like we did just before the break, we should have cleared the ball properly. We didn’t do enough in the final third and failed to create enough chances. We should have taken a shot on a few occasions. Going 1-0 down was a setback and we had to fight back from that. It’s always going to be really difficult when you’re 2-0 down here in Karlsruhe.

Ron Schallenberg:

There were one or two moments where we should have shot but didn’t. Lots of players were near the ball for their first goal, someone simply had to get rid of it. The lads themselves know that. The fans are behind us and we need to start delivering.
