Jakob Fimpel: A classic hard-fought win

Interim coach Jakob Fimpel was able to celebrate a victory in his first game in charge on Saturday (28/9). Following the 2-1 win in Münster, Fimpel and his opposite number Sascha Hildmann reflected on the match. Captain Kenan Karaman and Ron Schallenberg also gave their thoughts after the final whistle.

Jakob Fimpel:

I wasn’t personally able to enjoy the game during the 90 minutes, but that just made the moments afterwards with our fans even more special. Everyone’s relief could be sensed after the final whistle. Moussa Sylla was where a striker should be for his first goal. Our second goal was similar to their goal. Overall, it wasn’t a great game to watch, but a classic hard-fought win, and one we’ll gladly take. We can definitely be satisfied with the passion and the way we battled. We knew we would face a lot of crosses and long throws. The key thing at the end was how solid we defended deep into injury time.

Sascha Hildmann:

The luck wasn’t on our side today. We were 1-0 up and were pushing for a second goal. We had everything under control, but we then helped the opponents too much by making too many mistakes that led to goals. Things like that will be punished in the second division. The way their first goal came frustrated me more than how they scored their winner. At the same time though, we also benefited from an opposition mistake for our goal.

Kenan Karaman:

The three points will do us the world of good, we needed this win as a team. The past few days haven’t been easy. Jakob Fimpel prepared us really well, it’s also not been an easy situation for him because he’s only had a few training sessions with us. Our fighting spirit was decisive in the end – we battled right until the final whistle. After being unlucky to go behind, we showed great character and also that we’re still a team.

Ron Schallenberg:

You could see the relief on everyone’s face after full time. We know that it was far from a perfect performance, but the three points are all that matter in the end. Tonight’s result was really important after losing three in a row. Jakob Fimpel set us up brilliantly and we did well as a team. I’d like to give some special praise to Max Grüger. He did fantastically well on his debut and we worked nicely alongside each other in midfield.
