Schöpf brought on in home victory, Rönnow on bench for big win

There were two victories for FC Schalke 04’s players on international duty on Sunday in the World Cup qualifiers. Alessandro Schöpf was brought on just past the hour mark in Austria’s 3-1 win over the Faroe Islands. Meanwhile, Denmark enjoyed a comfortable 8-0 win over Moldova, but Frederik Rönnow had to watch from the bench as an unused substitute.

Two Schalke players were on international duty for their respective countries on Saturday evening. Sead Kolasinac was in the starting XI as Bosnia and Herzegovina drew 0-0 against Costa Rica in a friendly while Germany U21s drew 1-1 with Netherlands U21s, with Malick Thiaw on the bench.

World Cup Qualifers: Sead Kolasinac makes cameo appearance

Sead Kolasinac’s Bosnia and Herzegovina national team started their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 2-2 draw in Finland. The Schalke captain was brought on towards the end of Wednesday night’s game in Helsinki. Malick Thiaw celebrated from the bench as his Germany U21 teammates beat Hungary 3-0 in their European Championship opener.

Malick Thiaw: It’s a dream come true

For the first time in his young career, Malick Thiaw will represent Germany in the upcoming group stages of the European U21 Championship, which will be held in Hungary and Slovenia from 24th to 31st March. “It's a dream come true for me that I get to play for my country,” says the 19-year-old, who was born in Düsseldorf to a Senegalese father and a Finnish mother and only received his German passport a few weeks ago.
