Schalke looking to honour club legend Rudi Assauer

Rudi Assauer left behind a legacy at FC Schalke 04 like no one else. Now, the club has submitted a proposal to the city of Gelsenkirchen to rename the area between the VELTINS-Arena and the planned Tor auf Schalke to Rudi Assauer Platz. In this way, the club is looking to honour their former manager by dedicating a place to his memory.

The square where the Tausend-Freunde-Mauer currently stands will be renovated as part of an upcoming construction project, and will be the site of the brand-new Tor auf Schalke. However, the renaming is planned to take place prior to that. The club’s wish is to also change the address of the VELTINS-Arena, so that it will now be located at 1 Rudi Assauer Platz. The city’s planning department is expected to make a decision on the club’s proposal on 12th June 2019.
