Thomas Reis: Missed the basics in the first half

Schalke suffered a 1-0 defeat in Braunschweig on Sunday afternoon (20/8). Head coach Thomas Reis was unhappy with his side’s performance, particularly in the first half.

Thomas Reis:

We were missing the basics in the first half when it came to our tackling. Everybody should now be aware of the additional demands of the second division. You can’t just win games by playing nice football, you have to get stuck in too. Braunschweig were clearly the more aggressive and physical side. We tried to change things with our three substitutions at the break and started the second half well with Soichiro Kozuki’s chance. Braunschweig had chances to seal the win on a few occasions after we lost the ball too easily in the last 20 minutes. This defeat hurts – we wanted to take something from today’s game and will now have to analyse it thoroughly. We won’t win a game playing like we did in the first half.

Jens Härtel:

I believe we deserved to get the win today. You obviously need a bit of luck sometimes and we got that with Simon Terodde being narrowly offside when he scored in the second half. We did a lot better with the ball compared to last Friday’s game.

Simon Terodde:

We unfortunately were 1-0 down at half time, having come from behind in the first half last week here. Our performance was better after the break, we found more space but it still wasn’t enough. I don’t want to talk about a potential penalty, that’s not why we lost the game. We’re back at home on Friday and need to recover quickly for that one.

Timo Baumgartl:

We were trying to knock the ball about for their goal and were too open once we lost possession. We created a number of chances in the second half, including a goal ruled out for offside and a shot that hit the bar. Their goalkeeper did well too, but ultimately we should have scored. We weren’t good enough with the ball in the first half and didn’t meet our own expectations.
