Ralf Fährmann: We’re not playing like a side bottom of the league

“Every defender, and of course the goalkeeper, is happy when we get a clean sheet,” said Fährmann. “We would obviously be happier with wins though.” Schalke continue to wait for their first victory of 2023, but are now unbeaten in four games following four consecutive goalless draws against Köln, Gladbach, Wolfsburg and now Union. As a result, the Royal Blues have set a new Bundesliga record – no side had ever gone on a run of four 0-0s in a row before.

Heading in the right direction

“We are on the right track and definitely aren’t playing like a side bottom of the league,” stated Fährmann. “We put in a really focused and strong performance yesterday. Not many teams have come to Köpenick and got something from the game over the last few months, but we did! However, we know a point isn’t enough. We need wins!”

Fährmann was quick to point out that “we can’t forget that we were playing away against the team second in the league. A point here is a point gained. Not many people believed that we could get something.” The goalkeeper pointed to a strong team performance again yesterday. “The lads fly into every tackle and fight for one another. My teammates once again deserve praise. The fans also applauded us for our performance after the game.”

The 34-year-old believes S04 can get more than a 0-0 draw in the coming weeks if they can continue being solid in defence and improve in the final third. “I believe we can get what our hard work and commitment deserves, and start a run of wins.” The next games for Thomas Reis’ team are against Stuttgart and Bochum. “They are two really important matches,” said the goalkeeper. “I believe we can be successful in both games with the backing of our fans.”
