Thomas Reis: It’s important that we always believe in ourselves

Thomas Reis and his players were delighted after the final whistle on Wednesday night (9/11). The S04 boss spoke to the media after the game alongside his opposite number from Mainz, Bo Svensson. Marius Bülter and Dominick Drexler also gave their thoughts following a hard-fought 1-0 win.

Thomas Reis:

We knew what to expect from tonight. Our aim was to build on the performance from the Bremen game. We were really physical from the first whistle, created good chances early on and then took the lead through Simon Terodde. We could have closed the win out earlier. We had the luck on our side this time and are happy to have collected all three points. It’s important that we always believe we can win games. You can always give 100% during 90 minutes on the pitch and the lads did that brilliantly tonight.

Bo Svensson:

First of all, I would like to congratulate Thomas and FC Schalke 04 on a fully deserved win. Our opponents were better than us in all aspects tonight. It was a really disappointing performance by us. We lost almost every challenge and second ball. That just shows that we weren’t up for it enough.

Marius Bülter:

It was a really intense game and you could see how much it meant to us in the final few minutes. I’m simply so happy that we could finally get the three points, which is what we deserved for our hard work. We not only performed well, like we have over the last two games, but also finally got the right result. We created a few dangerous situations and played some decent football. On top of that, we didn’t allow Mainz many opportunities at all. I could have made it 2-0 towards the end, but I was maybe a bit too tired. It was annoying to only hit the post. Thankfully though, it didn’t matter in the end. The support was incredible tonight. It helps the team so much.

Dominick Drexler:

We’re all extremely relieved and delighted that we could get a win for our fans. We had more control of the game in the middle of the park and are improving in this regard. The energy was fantastic in the stadium again this evening and it really pushed us on. We played well, got stuck in and finally an opening goal for us counted! This win will definitely give us a confidence boost.
