Matthew Hoppe up for Rookie of the Month
Matthew Hoppe was in incredible form in January. The 19-year-old American scored a hat-trick against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, becoming the youngest player to do so for the Royal Blues in the Bundesliga. He then followed up the feat with goals in Frankfurt and against Köln.
His strong performances have earned him a nomination as January’s Rookie of the Month. Hoppe is one of three candidates up for the award, as selected by the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga GmbH, alongside Ermedin Demirovic (SC Freiburg) and Ritsu Doan (Arminia Bielefeld).
Fans can vote for the Schalke striker by heading to rookie-award.com. The winner will be selected by a combination of fan votes, as well as votes from selected Bundesliga experts.
In order to be eligible for the award, a player must be younger than 23 years of age by the opening day of the season, must not have featured in a Bundesliga starting XI in any previous season, and not have played more than 450 minutes across their previous appearances in the German top flight.
