Max Meyer: I didn’t realise at first it’d gone in!

One scored the winner, the other kept a clean sheet. Max Meyer and captain Ralf Fährmann shared their thoughts on making the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals.

Breel Embolo und Max Meyer freuen sich über den Sieg im DFB-Pokal gegen Köln.

Max Meyer:

We were very solidly defensively and prevented Köln from hitting us on the break. In the first half, we failed to make the most of opportunities when we got into the right areas. In the second half, we made some changes and found the solutions to our lack of creativity. If we’d have made the most of all of our chances, we could have won much more convincingly. Don’t get me wrong, we’re still happy. Regarding my goal, I just wanted to head the ball into the right area. The fact that it went in the far corner makes it even better – I didn’t even see until late that it’d gone in.

Ralf Fährmann:

Max’s goal was phenomenal. It was a classic Max goal (laughs). Jokes aside, he deserves that goal after his recent performances. I’m delighted for him. He’s been great this year, fighting for every 50/50 and throwing himself into every challenge. He’s more than deserved it in all honesty. We played very well and hardly gave Köln a sniff. Unfortunately, we struggled to put the game to bed but we deserved the win without question. We have to use this performance to push on into 2018. I’m proud of how much we’ve grown as a team in such a short time.
