S04 beaten 2-0 by FC Utrecht behind closed doors

After winning 1-0 at SC Verl on Thursday evening (18/7), the Royal Blues played another pre-season friendly on Friday afternoon (19/7). FC Utrecht, who came seventh in the Eredivisie last season, won 2-0 at S04’s training ground. The game was played behind closed doors due to the Taylor Swift concert at the VELTINS-Arena this evening.

First appearance for Emil Højlund

New signing Emil Højlund was in the starting XI for his first minutes in Schalke colours. He played up front alongside Kenan Karaman and Moussa Sylla. The bench was once again full of academy prospects, who all came on in the second half against Verl.

The first chance of the game didn’t come until the 31st minute after an extremely slow start to proceedings. Victor Rodríguez got a shot off at the near post from a cross, but his effort was blocked for a corner. The Royal Blues improved after this opportunity and had two chances themselves before the break. Kenan Karaman cut inside and shot over the bar (37’), before Tomas Kalas’ header from a Paul Seguin corner went over (43’).

Ohio puts Utrecht ahead

Head coach Karel Geraerts brought on Derry John Murkin for Emil Højlund during the interval. Just seconds into the second half, Alonzo Engwanda hit the outside of the post for the visitors. The second half, just like the first one, contained few chances as both defences were well-organised. The deadlock was finally broken after 78 minutes as Noah Ohio picked out the bottom corner with a first-time finish from a cross from the right.

More minutes for youngsters

Geraerts made a whole host of changes after the goal, taking off Schallenberg, Sanchez, Gantenbein, Seguin, Bachmann, Kalas, Karaman, Donkor and Sylla for Meisel, Barthel, Bulut, Grüger, Schmidt, Talabidi, Hong, Osamani and Tonye. Anthony Descotte added a second for Utrecht in the 83rd minute, and, despite Max Grüger’s narrow miss late on, Schalke couldn’t score themselves and it thus finished 2-0.

Twente up next

FC Schalke 04’s next friendly is on Wednesday (24/7) against FC Twente. The game will be played at the EVONIK Sportpark in Marl, which holds around 3,000 spectators. Kick off will be at 18:30 CEST.
