Simon Terodde: I only knew I had made history a few days after

“I saw the ball sit up for me and tried my hardest to get the ball in with my head,” Terodde described the situation, after Werder ‘keeper Jiri Pavlenka could only parry Rodrigo Zalazar’s long-range effort out for him to head home off the underside of the bar. The striker did not realise he’d scored at first, as he fell to the floor with defender Ömer Toprak and didn’t realise the ball was in the net. “I had to rely on the fans’ reaction to know if I had scored,” said Terodde, who quickly realised that the celebrations of the S04 fans meant he had scored.

The things which took place in the closing stages of the game meant that our number 9 was not able to properly celebrate the record until a few days later, Terodde admitted himself, as he was congratulated by the team and training staff at the start of the following week. “It was at that point that I knew I had made history,” said the striker, recognising how important his teammates were to him breaking the record. “I rely on my teammates a lot – they’re so important. At the end of the day, I’m the one scoring the goals from the things they do.”
